How does NotebookLM YouTube video summary work?

Once you add a YouTube URL to NotebookLM, it extracts the video transcript and treats it like any other document. To get a summary, ask directly in the chat: "Summarize this video," "What are the key takeaways?" or "Give me a structured breakdown by topic."

Every summary cites the source, so you can verify claims against the original transcript. For long videos, ask for section-by-section summaries or a list of key points per chapter. The quality depends on caption accuracy — auto-generated captions work well for most clear speech, but technical jargon and heavy accents can reduce accuracy. If a video has no captions, NotebookLM will either return an error or show an empty source.
