What is the difference between NotebookLM and Perplexity?

NotebookLM and Perplexity serve fundamentally different purposes:

NotebookLM is a closed-context tool. It only works with sources you upload. It cannot browse the web. Every answer is grounded in your documents with full citations. Best for: deep analysis of your own materials, research synthesis, studying.

Perplexity is a web search AI. It answers questions by searching the internet in real time and citing current sources. Best for: finding up-to-date information, exploratory research, quick factual lookups.

They work well together: use Perplexity to discover relevant articles and sources, then import those sources into NotebookLM to analyze them in depth. NotebookLM Plus is paid; Perplexity also has a free tier with rate limits.
