Is NotebookLM the same as ChatGPT?

NotebookLM and ChatGPT are fundamentally different tools:

ChatGPT is a general-purpose AI trained on vast amounts of internet data. It can discuss almost any topic, write creatively, and reason broadly — but it can also hallucinate facts it was never explicitly trained on.

NotebookLM does not use its own world knowledge to answer questions. It only draws on the sources you upload. If something is not in your sources, it says so. Every answer cites the exact source and passage.

The practical difference: ChatGPT is a knowledgeable generalist. NotebookLM is a meticulous research assistant that stays strictly within your documents. For research accuracy and citation reliability, NotebookLM wins. For open-ended tasks, creative work, or general questions, ChatGPT is the better fit.
