Is NotebookLM allowed in university?

NotebookLM occupies a different category from generative writing tools like ChatGPT. It does not write essays or generate content from nothing — it helps you understand and query sources you provide. Most university AI policies that restrict ChatGPT are targeting tools used to produce assessed work, not comprehension aids.

Using NotebookLM to understand readings, generate study questions, or synthesize research for your own notes is generally comparable to using any AI-assisted reading tool — similar to a smart highlighter or study guide generator.

Using it to draft or write assessed work without disclosure would violate most academic integrity policies, the same as any AI tool. When in doubt, check your institution's specific AI use guidelines. Many universities now distinguish between AI for learning support versus AI for generating graded submissions.
