Can NotebookLM search the internet?

No. NotebookLM does not browse the internet or fetch real-time information. It is a closed-context tool — everything it knows comes from the sources you add to each notebook. If you ask about something not covered by your sources, it will tell you it cannot find that information rather than searching online.

This is a key difference from tools like Perplexity or ChatGPT with browsing. The closed-context model is intentional: every answer is grounded strictly in your sources, eliminating the risk of hallucinated web results and giving you full citation traceability.

To get current information into NotebookLM, add relevant articles, reports, or web pages as sources manually. Tools like Kaptex make this faster with one-click capture from any webpage or YouTube video.
